Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the desert, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry. Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection.
Over the next 4 weeks (March 5, March 12, March 26 and April 2) during Children’s Liturgy of the Word the children will participate in a fishing activity to get into the spirit of this wonderful season. After reflecting on the readings from the Children’s Lectionary, the kids will literally “fish” for ideas on ways to “get caught being holy” under the themes of prayer, fasting, and service.
In addition to the caught fish, we are sending home a calendar which includes examples of Lenten activities. This fun visual aid will help the kids highlight and track what they have done to prepare for the coming of Easter. It is our hope that you and your children take these ideas and use them as suggestions towards celebrating the season of Lent. Can you be friendly to someone in need? Can you play a game with a family member instead of watching TV? How will you get caught being holy? We invite you to stop by the meeting room and see our Lenten display grow week by week.
